Sign Pro Steadies Her Shop Through Betrayal and a Near-Death Experience

S MANY SEASONED PSPs know, if your current wide-format customer has to look elsewhere for other print applications, there’s a chance you’ll lose that business altogether. It’s the driving force behind the “one-stop shop” mindset that many businesses across the country have adopted. Michele Bortree of Stonetree Signs in Asheboro, North Carolina, is someone who recognized the need for a one-stop shop years ago, and has dedicated her life to both expanding her business and honing her craft.

“Back in 1997, I started Stonetree Signs in my spare bedroom so I could work from home for my kids. I came across a material that allowed you to make sandblast stencils. I made a small ‘Welcome’ sign by cutting the pattern by hand on wood, and the sandblasted result was amazing,” says Bortree. “Since then, we’ve gone from my home, to a 5000-square-foot facility to now finalizing plans to purchase our neighbor’s business as they’re ready to retire, which will increase our capabilities and round us up to about 15,000 total square feet.”

Bortree and her team use their Roland DG equipment, including the new TrueVIS VG2-540 54-inch wide-format printer/cutter, for various applications.

Bortree and her team use their Roland DG equipment, including the new TrueVIS VG2-540 54-inch wide-format printer/cutter, for various applications.

As a result, it’s impossible to drive through Asheboro without seeing Stonetree’s professional touch throughout the town. They install graphics for local storefronts, wrap fleets of vehicles, create tradeshow booths for businesses hitting the road, and even print T-shirts, among other things.

Basically, if you need your logo printed, Stonetree Signs can make it happen. Bortree has a reputation for meeting deadlines and she‘s used to exceeding expectations, but recent history has made that exceptionally difficult. The last few years have thrown innumerable challenges toward business owners across the world. But they were intensely challenging for Bortree, who dealt with the betrayal of a close friend and business associate, and a very serious health scare that left her fighting for her life.

“I had a heart problem that essentially caused me to briefly die in the bathtub, as staggering as that is,” she says. “My husband immediately began performing CPR and my neighbor eventually saved my life. He’s an EMT and happened to be home with his defibrillator, which is why I’m here today.” That dire situation, paired with wavering COVID guidelines, supply chain issues, employment struggles, and event planning uncertainty would be enough to leave any PSP’s head spinning. But for Bortree the turmoil didn’t stop there: A former close friend and trusted associate’s (we’ll call her Jane) true colors were revealed.

From hair salons to apartment buildings, Stonetree Signs brands Asheboro, North Carolina.

From hair salons to apartment buildings, Stonetree Signs brands Asheboro, North Carolina.

Jane had worked for Stonetree for many years and earned Bortree’s full trust, handling important dealings within the company and stepping in to help run the show when Michele was swamped. The trust was so strong that it bled into Bortree’s personal life; Jane even helped plan her daughter’s wedding. And when the health scare happened, Bortree was ready to give 20 percent of the business to Jane and another employee to keep the business alive if she were to die, to provide for the family. However, what would be revealed during this process would shock Bortree to the core. While preparing to give a portion of the business over, some red flags began popping up. She noticed things were not adding up, there were many purchases unaccounted for and jobs not being billed through the company, and all signs pointed to the very person she was ready to give a portion of the business to. Needless to say, Bortree was shocked, left feeling stunned and violated. How could someone so close, someone who stood beside her during big family moments and substantial business deals, double-cross her like this?

“These past few years were more difficult than I could have imagined, but Stonetree is on pace to have an amazing 2022, and that’s what we’re excited about,” she says. “We continue to expand and grow our brand, and I really believe in and appreciate everyone on the team right now.”

Vehicle wraps are just one of Stonetree Signs' specialties.

Her passion for both business and life shine vibrantly, even through the phone. She loves leaving her mark on the town she calls home, and gets a kick out of seeing a local business that proudly displays window graphics created in her shop. Bortree’s perseverance is inspiring, and her willingness to bet on herself and continue expanding her business amidst turmoil and uncertainty demonstrates a very tangible and refreshing example of self-belief. No matter what life throws her way, Stonetree Signs remains solid as a rock.

Emerson Automation Solutions Upgrades Houston Facility with Interactive LED Video

Global technology, software, and engineering leader Emerson Automation Solutions recently added a pair of experiential LED display systems to its Rogerdale facility in west Houston. Emerson hired audiovisual solutions company AVI Systems to design and manage installation of the new high-end video display systems to replace an outdated LCD and rear-screen projection setup.Emerson Automation Solutions digital signage

Emerson’s new visual technology will serve as high-tech, interactive digital showcases for customers and other visitors to the facility.

The first LED display system replaced aging LCDs in the building’s Immersive Theater. The new setup includes three adjacent video walls set at 90-degree angles to create a highly immersive viewer experience. Each BRILLIANT™ Interior LED display employs an extremely tight 1.04 mm pixel pitch for ultra-high resolution. The Immersive Theater features an interactive touch-panel table equipped with MultiTaction software that allows users to share their presentation to the large LED wall.

The 7-foot-tall screens wrap around the room approximately 31 feet 6 inches long. With a resolution of 2,160 x 9,216, the new interactive video walls include just under 20 million total pixels.

“The processing and control systems used on these displays make this interface user-friendly while providing a dynamic interface,” said Mark Warren, executive account manager for AVI Systems. “Thank you to the AVI Systems team and partners that worked countless overtime hours to see this through.”

AVI Systems designs, integrates, and services various types of audiovisual systems and has the largest global footprint of audiovisual, unified collaboration, digital media, and managed services technology.

The second direct-view LED is part of the Solutions Center and replaced a video wall of aging 70-inch rear-screen-projection monitors. The new wall, located next to the Immersive Theater, is 7’4″ tall and 26’3” long and has a slight concave curve. Powered by VuWall and a Crestron control system, the BRILLIANT™ Interior display features a 1.25 mm pixel pitch. With a resolution of 1,800 x 6,400, the screen contains more than 11.5 million pixels.

Both of Emerson’s new LED display systems include PTZ HD cameras and Cisco video teleconference capabilities.

“As fine-pitch direct-view LEDs are becoming increasingly cost effective, more of our clients are able to enjoy the crisp, clear images they offer,” said Tony Kaiser, project manager for SNA Displays. “It’s rewarding to put extensive engineering resources to use for custom-designed video display systems that really stand out. What Emerson has created here is a great example of how solid design and high-end hardware can truly transform a space.”

RP Visual Solutions provided mounting systems for the project, including custom floor stands for both display systems.

“FASTSIGNS® is proud to be recognized by Franchise Business Review as one of the most recession-proof franchises globally,” said Mark Jameson, chief support and development officer at Propelled Brands. “This award is a recognition of FASTSIGNS® providing our franchisees the tools and systems to run a successful small business even during turbulent times, while also delivering a service that almost every business or organization will need, even during times of crisis.”

Franchise Business Review (FBR), a franchise research firm that performs independent surveys of franchisee satisfaction, provides the only rankings of franchises based solely on actual franchisee satisfaction and performance. “FASTSIGNS has a broad range of products and services that are needed in all kinds of economic environments by a large variety of businesses and organizations,” said Al Cothern, FASTSIGNS franchisee of West Palm Beach, Florida, who opened his first franchise during the previous recession in 2009. “While a recession is generally bad for business, it creates opportunities as well. SCOTUS Ruling Favors On-Premise Signs

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS, Washington) has ruled that the traditional regulatory distinction between on-premises signs and off-premises signs (billboards) is content-neutral and, therefore, constitutional.

The ruling came in a closely watched case, City of Austin v. Reagan National Advertising. A lower court had ruled that cities could not differentiate between the two types of signs. The International Sign Association (ISA; Alexandria, VA) had submitted two amicus briefs to SCOTUS urging them to rule in favor of on-premises signs.

“ISA has long contended that the traditional regulatory distinction between on-premises signs and billboards is location-based, not content-based, and that eliminating the distinction would be harmful to the on-premises sign industry,” reads a statement, in part, from the association.

“We submitted our briefs to educate the Court on the practical and legal differences between on-premises signs and billboards, and to point out the importance of on-premises signs to America’s small businesses, and it appears that the justices took our advice to heart,” said David Hickey, ISA’s vice president of advocacy. “Thanks to the Court’s decision in Austin v. Reagan, we will have regulatory certainty across the country and our industry can continue to succeed and grow.”
