New Baltimore Law to Create Digital Sign District in Downtown Area

A new bill signed into law by Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott will create a sign district in downtown Baltimore, “the first step in a process that may pave the way for digital and video signage in the heart of the city,” The Baltimore Sun reports.

City council members voted unanimously in favor of the plan, which creates the boundaries of the district in which the new signs are allowed.

The article says the measure doesn’t outline a specific vision for the signs, noting a plan still must be submitted to the city’s planning commission before additional signage can be placed in the district.

At a recent meeting of the council’s Ways and Means Committee, Shelonda Stokes, president of the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, said she hopes the new signage will add “vibrancy” to a downtown district that could “use a little love.”

In a written statement, Colin Tarbert, president and CEO of the Baltimore Development Corp., said the sign district would create opportunities for locally owned small businesses, including minority- and women-owned businesses.
